Iran said on September 4, 2011 that it had overcome repeated setbacks to successfully connect the Bushehr nuclear plant to the country’s national electricity grid. The Bushehr plant, which is Iran’s first nuclear plant, will initially contribute 60MW of power to the grid. Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said that the plant would take some time before operating at its full capacity of 1,000MW.
The start-up will come as a relief to Tehran after many years of delays and false starts at the plant it hopes will show the world it has joined the nuclear club despite sanctions imposed in an attempt to curb its disputed nuclear progress.
The completion of the Bushehr atomic project faced repeated delays .Eventually; it was with Russian assistance that the plant was completed, three decades after work was first taken up. Iran will return to Russia all the spent fuel-the material generated by the reactor that can potentially be used to make weapons.
